Other Names: Brindal Berry, Brindall Berry,
Brindle berry, Gorikapuli, HCA, Hydroxycitric acid, Malabar
Tamarind.
Brindall Berry Extract contains 30% Hydroxycitric acid
by weight. Hydroxycitrate is a competitive inhibitor of
citrate co-enzyme in fatty acid biogenesis and inhibits
carbohydrate absorption. Hydroxycitric acid is extracted
from the pericarp of Garcinia cambogia whose supplements
are derived from the fruit and rind of these plants native
to India. Garcinia cambogia has been used as a condiment
in Thai and Indian cuisine and has been promoted for weight
control.
Animal studies investigating Brindall Berry Extract
revealed that it suppressed fatty acid synthesis, suppressed
food intake and decreased gains of body weight. There are
only a few human studies examining the use of Brindall Berry
Extract. In a study containing 135 patients, the effect
of Brindall Berry Extract on weight and total body fat was
examined. When the study was finished, the investigators
found no changes in either body weight or amount of fat
in either the group using the extract or the control group
of patients. The investigators were surprised by this result
as previous information reported that Brindall Berry Extract
had a significant effect on body weight or fat mass when
used alone or in combination with other ingredients. The
results were disappointing.
At present, therapeutic effects of Brindall Berry Extract
supplementation are not supported by sound clinical data;
therefore its use is not recommend for weight loss or any
other reason.
